Would you like to become a breeder but don’t know where to start?

If you're interested in becoming a breeder but lack experience, we are happy to help. Within the association, we’re eager to share knowledge and guide you in starting a responsible and informed breeding journey. You just need to follow a few steps:

  • Register with RCPL on the "Join Us" page.
  • Reach out to the appropriate mentor (depending on the species you are interested in) to request mentorship and training.
  • Try to gather some knowledge independently using foreign resources (e.g., mouse genetics at hiiret.fi or rat information at ratvarietyguide.weebly.com).
  • Prepare your breeding setup (your mentor will guide you on what is required).

Once you're registered, an experienced breeder will become your mentor. Together you will establish breeding goals, select suitable animals from reputable lines, and guide you through the learning process. You’ll learn how to select and pair animals, care for mothers and litters, and properly raise the offspring. At a certain point, you can expect a knowledge test. Passing the test, gaining experience, and receiving your mentor's approval are the three main steps to becoming an independent breeder.

We offer ongoing support, access to proven breeding lines in various colors and traits, mentorship, and regular educational materials. You will always have someone to turn to in case of questions or challenges.
